“I probably won't win. because I'm too short” “They only crown girls in white gowns so I have to wear white.” “This is my last year to prove myself to the judges.” “If I don't make the top 15 I’ll have nothing to show for myself.” While these thoughts may not seem horrendous, they are all self-limiting ideas that can keep you from embracing your full authentic self on stage. Improving your mindset will lead to more confidence, increased self-empowerment and strengthened resilience. But how do you know if your mindset needs improving? Here are 11 signs your mindset is ruining your pageant performance:#1 Sign of a Bad Pageant Mindset: You are constantly comparing yourself to the other contestantsYou can't help but wonder how everybody else is preparing for the pageant. Maybe you even look at their social media to see how much they're working out and wonder if you should be working out more. Yikes!

A new era of Miss Teen USA has begun! Last year, Crystle Stewart, Miss USA 2008, became the new owner of the Miss USA franchise and with this change came some major GAME CHANGERS. This blog post is specifically about Miss Teen USA and what we can expect at State Pageants this year! (Let me know in the comments below if you want a post about Miss USA) If you plan to compete in your state’s Teen USA preliminary pageant this year—buckle up. And start taking notes! Miss Teen USA Game Changer #1 — Youthful GlamCrystle Stewart has perfected the balance between flashy performances and age-appropriate content to create an entertaining production that is full of what I am calling “Youthful Glam" (brb while I trademark this genius phrase). Youthful Glam is a combination of glam makeup and outfits (similar to what we see on the Miss USA stage) with the young playful energy we expect from our Teen contestants. There is a delicate balance to be achieved here (I think we can also expect to see some contestants go way too far in the glam direction and lose that playful teen energy) but when it is achieved it will be absolutely captivating and a joy to watch! Breanna Myles won Miss Teen USA because she was youthful in activewear and glamorous in evening gown—but it wasn’t a sexy glamor. It was a teenager having fun and enjoying her confidence while on stage. Miss Teen USA Game Changer #2 — Lighter energy headshotsUSA National Miss is what I like to call the Holy Mecca of youth pageants in America. With hundreds of contestants aged 4 - 25 competing for titles in 6 different age divisions, a prize package of over $100,000 (per national title!) and a slogan of Positive Pageantry, this pageant is truly an experience fit for a Queen. I was fortunate to experience the UNM Magic for the first time this year when I judged over 300 contestants in the Senior Division (Jr. Teen, Teen & Miss) at their national pageant in Orlando Florida. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into but I truly had no idea! Walking away from the experience, I now have answers to so many questions I had back when I was competing. Lucky for you, you don’t have to wait until you’re done competing to get answers to the questions I know you’ve been agonizing over. So let’s get into it—these are the 5 lessons I learned while judging and the 5 lessons you need to learn before competing at USA National Miss. USA NATIONAL MISS—LESSON 1 |
